Voters Will Decide Fate of Erie County Charter Changes

Mark Scott

BUFFALO, NY (2006-11-01) Voters in Erie County will be asked next week to approve a series of changes to the county charter. The changes will appear on the ballot as a single proposition. Voters will be asked to vote "yes" or "no" on the entire package.

The changes were recommended by the Erie County Charter Revision Commission and unanimously approved by the County Legislature. The most controversial recommendation -- a hybrid form of county management -- was rejected by legislators and will not go before voters. But nearly three dozen other charter revisions are part of the proposition that voters are being asked to approve.

The group Western New York Coalition for Progress supports passage of the charter revisions. Coalition president Alan Bedenko is a local attorney and the writer of the Buffalo Pundit blog. He joined WBFO's Mark Scott on the phone to talk more about the future of county government.
