Reform Advocates Unveil Different Proposal for County Gov't

April 11, 2006 10:06 PM EDT

(April 11, 2006) - - Independent reform advocates have unveiled their own recommendations to streamline Erie County government.

The Western New York Coalition for Progress disagrees with a proposed charter revision that would create an appointed post of county manager, while keeping the elected county executive.

Alan Bedenko of the Western New York Coalition for Progress said, "The other thing that we want to avoid is the creation of a new executive-level position that would pay upwards of $100,000 per year, together with the bureacracy that would go along with that. We would rather use the existing structures in a more efficient manner, and save some money on the back side."

The Coalition favors strengthening the powers and management qualifications for the deputy county executive, and monthly financial reports to the comptroller and lawmakers.
